We will hold a factory tour at the Kyoto Dyeing Center on Saturday, April 20. This is a valuable opportunity to see a demonstration of KINUITO’s proprietary “SUMI dyeing” technology up close. Free participation, advance reservation required. Limited to 30 people, first-come first-served.
What is SUMI Dyeing Technology
A dyeing method unique to KINUITO that fuses sumi-nagashi (ink marbling) techniques passed down for over 300 years in Kyoto with modern dyeing technology.
Technical Characteristics
- Original formulation of natural sumi ink (pine soot, oil soot) and plant dyes
- Natural convection patterns created by dropping ink on water surface
- One-of-a-kind gradient expression that differs with each piece
- 80% reduction in water usage and 90% reduction in environmental impact of wastewater compared to chemical dyes
Secret of Color Development
While conventional sumi dyeing centered on black and gray, SUMI dyeing achieves deep coloration by combining natural dyes such as indigo, madder, and lithospermum with ink. Ink particles penetrate deep into fibers, with characteristics resistant to fading even after repeated washing.
Application to Recycled Fibers
Conventionally, dye fixation has been difficult for recycled fibers. However, SUMI dyeing achieves beautiful color development even on recycled polyester due to the characteristic of ink microparticles physically adhering to fibers. This supports the quality of KINUITO products.

Wastewater treatment system, solar power generation facilities - Q&A and free tour (approximately 20 minutes)
Please wear clothing that can get dirty on the day. We also have a simple dyeing experience corner.
